Okay, this just in. Late in the election cycle, the Republicans, as is their wont, are declaring that Democrats will “raise your taxes” by failing to enact extensions of the Bush tax cuts.
Let’s review, shall we?
Those tax cuts were enacted early in the first Bush term based on the assurances of their sponsors, including President Bush, that they would be made affordable by including “sunset” provisions, without which the projected budget deficits would increase in an ever-steepening curve into the indefinite future. Moderate Republicans and some Democrats extracted these assurances from the White House as a condition for their affirmative vote on those measures.
Now, it is the policy of the Republican leadership to complain that if elected, Democrats would commit the egregious political sin of failing to break the government’s promise.
