Notes for a short message preached at the Temple Hills Church of God as part of a “Seven Last Words” service on Friday evening, April 6, 2012
It is finished
It is completed
The goal as been reached
The task s accomplished!
How do you know when something is complete? When you knew what you set out to do.
Jesus had set his face to Jerusalem.
He knew he would be opposed.
He knew he would be arrested.
He knew he would be rejected.
He knew he would be lied about.
He knew he would be spat upon.
He knew he would be mocked.
He knew he would be slapped.
He knew he would be crucified.
He knew he would have to demonstrate the love of God in the face of all of this, to make known the character of his father.
He knew he would give voice to the cry of the forsaken. Ps22:1 He knew he would give voice to the cry of the thirsty. Ps 22:15
He knew he must fulfill his own teaching — love his enemies, turn the other cheek.
He knew God would hear his cry. Ps 22:24
Paul: that I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his suffering. Being made conform able unto his death.
Jesus: The works That I do you shall do also
You have something to finish. You have a telos, a goal, an accomplishment, a purpose. It is to be conformed to Christ, to come to your own Jerusalem, your own Sanhedrin, your own Pilate. Perhaps to wash the feet of someone who learns from you, or even someone who will betray you.
ps 22:32- he has done this!
The goal — reached!
